For journalists
Dazzled is an independent, non-partisan road-safety campaign about dangerous headlight glare on Australian roads. Reporters are welcome. Here is the story, the evidence, and how to reach us.
The story in a line
Modern headlights are blinding Australian drivers - and Australia has never even measured the problem. The safety-rating body does not test the glare a car throws at others, the numbers in the news are all borrowed from overseas, and the fixes (correct aim, an end to illegal retrofits, a glare rating) point at bodies that could act tomorrow.
The numbers (labelled by source)
- 96% of drivers think some or most headlights are too bright UK: UK Government study (DfT / TRL, Oct 2025, n=1,850)
- 43% of drivers aged 75+ have cut down or stopped driving at night because of glare UK: RAC / College of Optometrists (Jan 2026, n=1,745)
- 4.3× more glare reaches your eyes from a tall SUV/ute headlight than from a sedan US: US Government study (NHTSA / RPI Lighting Research Center, 2008)
- Not tested Australia’s safety-rating body does not measure the glare a car throws at others Australia: ANCAP, via ABC News (19 Jul 2026)
- ×3 intraocular light-scatter roughly triples between age 45 and 77 - the same headlight blinds older eyes far more Peer-reviewed: van den Berg, straylight review; Lijarcio et al. 2020 (IJERPH)
There is no Australian glare survey - these figures are UK, US, or peer-reviewed, and we label them as such. The absence of local data is itself part of the story.
What we can provide
- The current number of Australians who have signed.
- De-identified, first-hand accounts from drivers who have been dazzled (never naming individuals).
- A plain-English brief on the evidence, with every figure sourced and labelled by country.
- An interview.
